The main objective of this project is to assess the application of pruning fully mechanised<\/strong> in the olive crop<\/strong>, determining its effectiveness in optimising vegetative growth<\/strong> and production<\/strong> in both intensive<\/strong> and traditional olive groves<\/strong>. The aim is therefore to  compare<\/strong> this system with the conventional pruning system<\/strong> using a chainsaw, at agronomic, productive and economic levels.<\/p>\n

The project duration is from January 2025 to May 2026<\/strong>, although it includes studying the 2024 and 2026 seasons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Objectives<\/h3>\n

The specific objectives of this project are:
\u2022    To have several field trials<\/strong> where, under real conditions, the adaptation of olive cultivation in the areas of Baix Camp, Terra Alta and Baix Ebre \u2013 Montsi\u00e0<\/strong> and the varieties arbequina, empeltre and morruda<\/strong> can be studied under different pruning practices (manual vs fully mechanised).
\u2022    To quantify the effect of mechanical<\/strong> and manual<\/strong> pruning on the water<\/strong> status and transpiration<\/strong> of the different olive varieties through innovative remote-sensing technologies.<\/strong>
\u2022    To quantify the effect on the vegetative, productive and economic performance<\/strong> and the sustainability<\/strong> of the fully mechanised pruning<\/strong> system compared with the manual pruning<\/strong> system using a chainsaw.
\u2022    To improve the profitability<\/strong> of plantations by reducing labour costs<\/strong> and the time<\/strong> invested.
Increase oil production<\/strong> per area by reducing the period of alternate bearing<\/strong>.
\u2022    To optimise the flow of information<\/strong> and organise efficient communication<\/strong> with companies and producers<\/strong> in areas with olive-oil activities (both in Catalonia and other European regions).<\/p>\n

Agr\u00edcola del Campo Santa B\u00e1rbara<\/strong>, as leader of the Operational Group, COSELVA<\/strong> and Uni\u00f3 Fruits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Project partners<\/h3>\n

In addition to the participating cooperatives, the project partners are the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia<\/strong>, acting as coordinator of the operational group; the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA<\/strong>), as the research centre; and the company Viveros de Abel<\/strong>, which is not a member of the Operational Group but will support certain activities.<\/p>\n

Expected results<\/h3>\n

\u2022    To have 3 demonstration farms<\/strong> for mechanical pruning<\/strong> that will enable its study for possible extrapolation<\/strong> to other farms and holdings in the different areas.
\u2022    To determine, under real field conditions, the olive yield<\/strong> through different pruning practices<\/strong> (mechanised vs manual).
\u2022    To have information on the carbon footprint<\/strong> and the sustainability indices<\/strong> of each pruning system.
\u2022    To have objective data<\/strong> on the feasibility and limitations of the methodology<\/strong> in order to recommend the fully mechanised pruning technique<\/strong>.
\u2022    To obtain an assessment<\/strong> of the water-response<\/strong> of each variety<\/strong>.
\u2022    To make available to farmers<\/strong> the data and results<\/strong> that can be consulted online. data and results<\/strong> available for online consultation.<\/p>\n
